Kerala Puttu Recipe in English (Steamed Rice Flour Cake)
Ingredients
For Puttu Flour
Rice flour – 2 cups (puttu podi)
Grated coconut – 1 cup
Salt – ¼ tsp
Water – as needed
Optional
Sugar or jaggery – for sweet version
Kerala Puttu Recipe
1. Prepare the Flour
Take rice flour in a mixing bowl.
Add salt and mix well.
Sprinkle water little by little.
Mix using fingers until it becomes moist and crumbly.
2. Steam the Coconut
Boil water in the puttu cooker (bottom vessel).
Keep ready while filling the puttu maker.
3. Layer the Puttu Maker
Add 2 tbsp grated coconut at the bottom.
Add 3–4 tbsp prepared rice flour.
Repeat layers until full.
End with coconut on top.
4. Steam the Puttu
Place the cylinder on the cooker.
Steam for 5–7 minutes.
5. Serve Hot
Remove carefully and push out the puttu using a stick.

Tips for Soft Puttu
✅ Use fine puttu flour
✅ Do not add too much water
✅ Always steam on medium heat
✅ Fresh coconut gives best taste
